EUROSPINE Presidential Address: Clinical Research - Reflections for the Future
Margareta Nordin, EUROSPINE President 2016-2017 and first female president of the society, drew a conclusion of her presidency. Much has been achived, pursued from her predecessors and the way has been paved for much more to come!

The focus of her presentation was the importance of research and how that influences clinical practice, be it by randomised controlled trials, cohorts, registries or big data. Careful research will change our the of practice based on evidence. EUROSPINE is taking a leading role in promoting best-practice education and research, thereby enhancing treatments for our patients. Announcement of EUROSPINE Grants 2017
Since 2011 more than 1 million Euros have been allocated funding of 33 research projects by members of EUROSPINE. In 2017 5 grant applications were approved following review of 26 submitted applications by the EUROSPINE Task Force Research. A total of almost € 150,000 will be awarded for research projects:
Next deadline for application will be 31 January 2018!

It was a great honour to choose the medal lecturer Mark Pollock, who is a great inspiration and motivator to many, mentions Frank Dowling. With his lecture, he got to the core of what EUROSPINE is all about – to achieve things through effort, study and hard work. Pollock capsuled the idea of this association - to get people together and work collaboratively to succeed. He resumes ‘EUROSPINE is the absolute epitome of collaboration of spine specialists from all over Europe and indeed from all over the world.’

Scientific Programme: after the excitements of the morning, Thursday had yet much more to offer! Again 2 EUROSPINE Lunch Symposia and several Industry sponsored Lunch Workshops attracted a great number of participants, followed by the sessions Growing Spine, Diagnostics and Cervical Spine before the EUROSPINE Members’ Cocktail took place in conjunction with the EUROSPINE General Assembly. Approximately 70 Members enjoyed some snacks and drinks, before listening to the society’s achievements 2017, approving the financial statements, choosing Vienna, Austria as the location for EUROSPINE 2020 and electing Tim Pigott as the society’s new Vice President! >> see the interview with Tim Pigott here!

Network Experience @ Guinness Storehouse (at own expense)
A record number of more than 400 guests came to enjoy the casual atmosphere at the Guinness Storehouse. Everyone was invited to walk through the Guinness Museum upon arrival, drummers welcomed the guests in a true Irish manner and of course with a Guinness to try, before the impact dance show really wowed each and everyone of us!
The official part of the evening began with a cordial welcome and toast by local host Ciaran Bolger. Followed by heartwarming words from Margareta Nordin, EUROSPINE Past President to be a few minutes later, thanking the EUROSPINE ExCom for their excellent work during her presidency and giving a big hand to the office team for support mostly behind the scenes, before she ceremonially handed over the EUROPSINE presidency 2017-2018 to Frank Kandziora. As first act of his presidency Frank Kandziora, did not only thank everyone for the honour of having been elected for the position, he also gave a small insight into what to expect in the next year.
